Parent Workshop

First Thursday of the Month | 7:00-8:30pm | Free | In Junior High Room (enter through kids and student wing door)

Parents helping parents

Being a parent today can be overwhelming.  Culture and technology are changing at an even faster pace, children and teenagers have more access to the world than ever before, and resources seem scarce for parents.  First MB Students wants to help narrow the gap between the known and unknown in today's teenage world. These monthly Parent Workshops are all about providing resources and tools to enable parents to be better equipped.  Each workshop will be focused on a specific topic having various people present content, then always ending with a Q and A time. Each presenter comes with personal experiences, training, and practical resources to share. The best way to engage with your children is to first become a learner.  And our presenters come with humbleness and an eager willingness to help any parent.  This is a place for parents to be free to ask any questions and share their struggles knowing that they are not alone.

Next Workshop: Social Media Mania
Thursday, October 3 | 7:00 - 8:30pm | Free
Your teens understand how to navigate the world of social media. They know the lingo, they create their own life online. Wouldn't you like to understand it better or even have access to it? This workshop is all about understanding social media, the attraction/obsession teens have with it, and Parents/Guardians will learn what apps to avoid, how to set up and use such apps as Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Such practical things as:

  • Setting up parental settings for IOS and Android
  • Learn texting lingo
  • Learn how to use various social media

Who are these workshops for?  If I don't attend First MB Church can I still come?
The target audience is for ANY parents of pre-teens or teenagers (whether you go to First MB Church or not).  Although any adults who work or influence children/teenagers are welcome!  Foster care parents, guardians, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. are welcome!  As of right now, we are not planning on covering parenting topics for younger children, although we are looking for a way to add that age group.  And yes, this is for any adult whether they go to First MB Church or not.  So a perfect opportunity to bring friends, neighbors, etc.

Do I need to register?
No, just show up!  Feel free to invite your neighbors or friends who are also parents/guardians of teenagers too!

Can my child or teenager attend?
Several of these topics are sensitive in nature and it might be difficult for you to ask/answer questions with your child/teenager in the room.  So we do ask that only adults attend these workshops.

Are these workshops recorded or streamed live?
Right now we are not planning on streaming them live due to privacy concerns.  As for recording them, we are unsure if the capabilities will be available by the time we start.

What if I miss a workshop--will the same topic happen again?
Right now we are not planning on doing the same topic in the same school year.  However, we are open to add another workshop if one of them was more popular or something like that.  We plan on repeating several topics year after year.

Who are the teachers or lead presenters?
We will have a wide variety of pastors and professionals who are lined up to speak.

Where do you meet?
We meet at First MB Church.  Use the "Kids and Students" entrance head straight through the hallway and enter the Junior High Room on your right (about 50ft in).

I have a topic that I want to know more about, can I request a topic?
We would love to take requests!  If you have some questions, comments, or suggestions please email us at students@firstmbchurch.org.
